Lies and Lullabies

Some people say that there's no such thing as a white lie.  Every prevarication is an intentional attempt to lead someone astray, to conceal the truth, and that can't be good.  But they're wrong.  There are noble lies.  And the noblest lie of all is the lullaby.  We sing to the ones we love the promise of peaceful slumber, of sweet dreams, of waking again to a brand new day, when the promise is not ours to make.  The world is hard, and cold, untamed and unpredictable, and we ache from its burdens.  And yet we must have hope to endure it, most of all when everything around us is hopeless.  We must tell our beloved, as if we know it ourselves, that everything will be all right.  And when we sing our lullaby, we mean it, we hope it, we are sincere in our devotion to the promise, and we will be there to watch over them and to protect them while they let go of their troubles and venture into the unknown.  It is a lie, a lie we hope they believe, a lie we mean with all our heart.
Let me tell you a story
Full of promise and glory
Let me whisper in your ear
A deception so sincere...
I mean it all, all that I say
But it all has a way of getting away
It's love in disguise, but look in my eyes
There lie the lies and the lullabies...
***
Rest your weary head my child
Let your hopes and dreams run wild
Listen to my lullaby
Gentle as your winsome sigh...
I mean it all, all that I say
But it all has a way of getting away
It's love in disguise, but look in my eyes
There lie the lies and the lullabies...
***
When this world has took its toll
And I try to sooth your soul
But your ache makes angels cry
Is my lullaby such a lie?
I mean it all, all that I say
But it all has a way of getting away
It's love in disguise, but look in eyes
There lie the lies and the lullabies...
